Fame came
very late for Braddock, who started as a welter and grew into a heavy.
His first seven years were very uneven and included a failure to win
the light-heavyweight title from Tommy Loughran who out pointed him in
1929. Braddock, with a family to support, was reduced to the breadline
in the depression of the early 1930's, but in 1934 was given a contest
at Madison Square Garden against a rising young heavy named Corn
Griffin. Braddock was expected to be a stepping- stone, but created a
sensation by winning in three rounds. Two more good wins and he was
challenging Max Baer for the world heavyweight title, and he astounded
everyone by winning comfortably on points. He did not defend his title
for two years, then dropped it to Joe Louis by a knockout in eight
rounds. He had one more fight , outpointing Tommy Farr over ten rounds
in New york at the age of 31. |
